What have you done to market your forum that worked? I'm open to ideas!

I visit forums like forum promotion and post where I can there; I also see many other sites that advertise there and make a few friends along the way.
I put my site in the signature bars wherever I'm allowed.

My sites are hobbies, so I don't need to spend money on advertising.
