WordPress has this forum plugin which you can use for the forum purpose. And it seems like a good forum plugin that you can use to setup simple forum. I know many people who are making use of the same and have found it pretty easy for the simple operations too.

What about you? Have you tried BBPress?

Yes, it is a bit too basic for me.

If you're not updating it every few days, you risk security problems; that's the only thing that was a turn-off for me.

For what it is it's a nice option to have, but as a full-blown forum platform, it's lacking.

It will look ok until we try mainstream forum software.

It works only for small communities within the site or blog. I have seen those who used, but their are cool plugins for SEO. I would suggest if you planned for a big or medium then go for Xenforo.
One more thing why not give a ry when it is free software.
